A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Ever Gone Away All By Yourself?
Right now I'm gobsmacked listening to the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed. At age 26, and after making a complete hash of her life, Cheryl decided to hike the Pacific Coast Trail...alone. She carried no weapons other than The World's Loudest Whistle, and was burdened with an overloaded backpack and boots a size too small. But the most fascinating part of the book is how she dealt not just with the physical rigors of the trail but also with the difficulties of dealing with her own mind. Her trail mantras were "I am not afraid" (even when I think she bloody well should have been) and "Fear begets fear; courage begets courage."
Have you ever done anything like this-- had a grand adventure entirely on your ownsome?
I could so understand Cheryl's deep desire to be alone. I tried camping alone once (with my dog) but it was just too terrifying an experiment to repeat, so my admiration for Strayed runs high. I used to drive up into the San Gorgonio wilderness and hike all day in the back woods, often without seeing another soul. Once (and I quail at the very thought now) I spent all day tripping on mushrooms in a nearby creek bed, this time also accompanied only by a large dog. I used to take a short trip by myself every summer, usually without a reservation or a plan. I'd pack a suitcase, pick a direction, and drive until something looked promising. I've always loved driving, just driving, without destination or schedule. In this way I spent nights in Cambria on the central California coast, Ashland and the Oregon coast, Lake Tahoe, and wine country.
I always felt safe on these little trips and felt comfortable walking about and finding a good place to stay and eating out alone. But three years ago this changed. After paradise50 had recovered from his treatments I decided to take one of my time-alone trips and headed up Highway 70 through the Feather River Canyon. I got as far as Buck's Lake, only a couple of hours away before I stopped and spent the first miserable night alone I'd ever experienced. The next day I called pNut and asked if he wanted to join me, and he drove up to the lake that afternoon. I'd lost my taste for travel alone and it hasn't come back yet.
What grand trips or adventures have you taken on your own?
If none, what do you wish you had done?
Whatever you do, wherever you go, be careful out there!
