On January 23, 2015, convicted felon/former Republican Governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell had his law license suspended by the Virginia State Bar after his conviction on 11 felony federal corruption charges. A disciplinary board of the Virginia State Bar cited the felonies as the reason for his disbarment. McDonnell was ordered to appear before the state bar's disciplinary board on February 20, 2015 to show cause why his license should not be further suspended or revoked.
The suspension of his law license is devastating and embarrassing for McDonnell, who, in addition to serving as a Virginia governor, was also elected as Virginia's attorney general from 2006 to 2009 and was also a JAG officer in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1997, when he retired as lieutenant colonel.
McDonnell is scheduled to report to prison on February 9, 2015 to begin his two-year sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge James Spencer last year. McDonnell has appealed his September of 2014 conviction to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. McDonnell's wife, Maureen, who has been convicted of 9 corruption charges, is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Spencer on Feb. 20, 2015 as well.
Meanwhile, what does a former and disgraced governor/Attorney General/JAG Officer with a felony conviction do for employment? McDonnell was hired as a consultant for a mechanical contractor, Bay Mechanical, Inc., after his conviction.
After being touted by Mitt Romney as a potential V.P. in 2012, McDonnell's fall from grace has been quick and dramatic.
