The Honorable Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, believes that Alabama law banning same-sex marriage is consistent with his Biblical views. He therefore believes that the federal court order striking down the Alabama law is un-Biblical, nay anti-Biblical. Since in Justice Moore’s brain, the Bible trumps the Constitution, he has stated that the federal ruling is therefore null and void, and that all elected and appointed Alabama officials must defy the federal order. He also seems to believe that his actions are not seditious and are not in violation of his oath of office.
Southern Poverty Law Center disagrees with Justice Moore. SPLC believes that the Bible does not trump the Constitution and that his statements and actions are indeed violations of his oath of office.
Today they filed an ethics complaint with the Judicial Inquiry Commission of Alabama.
Our complaint spells out three specific violations of Alabama’s Canons of Judicial Ethics: his improper comments about pending cases; his lack of faithfulness to the law; and his disrespect for the integrity of the judiciary.
Coincidentally (or not), SPLC filed
a similar complaint against Judge Moore in 2003 when he built a monument to the Ten Commandments in front of his courthouse. Ironically (or not), Judge Moore was removed from the office of Chief Justice as a result of the 2003 SPLC filing.
Alabama voters reinstated him in 2012.
We all anxiously await the outcome of today’s filing. Pass the popcorn.
