[Changed Headline now that this has been lingering in the Rec'c stories area for a while. My initial headline was a lot more flabbergasted that I was the first person to mention the Brian Williams story...I appreciate all the recs and comments. This is the first time I've brought anything forward that more than a couple handfuls of people cared about].
As recently as last Friday, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams was touting a story about being shot down in a helicopter during the early days of America's invasion of Iraq. But then, over the weekend, a couple guys who ACTUALLY got shot down in that helicopter called him on it through the Military publication Stars & Stripes:

Williams defense is odd to say the least: “I would not have chosen to make this mistake,” Williams said [and] .... told his Nightly News audience that the erroneous claim was part of a "bungled attempt" to thank soldiers who helped protect him in Iraq in 2003.
Yeah, I always thank soldiers by making myself part of their trials and tribulations to make it look like I'm a brave hero too!
Williams claims to just have "misremembered," but he sure had a lot of details to the incident when he recounted it to David Letterman, just a couple years back:

You can skip to the 2:30 mark if you like that's where the storytelling begins.
People on Reddit are complaining that links to and information about this story are being removed as fast as they go up. That's pretty spooky. Who's looking out for Brian Williams, and why?
