Welcome! This is the Tuesday edition of the Pootie Diaries.
Today's Subject: Animal Rescues
"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man." -Mark Twain
This diary is a politics free zone, meant for relaxing and unwinding for a few minutes, before going back to the serious stuff.
Feel free to add your own photos and comments. Pet care and concern comments are always allowed, of course, but otherwise, please keep it lighthearted and friendly.
Also, please watch the language, because this is a kid friendly diary. Thanks!
This is another diary reposted from 2010. I tried to check all the links, but if I missed any, please let me know so I can correct the problem. Thanks!
Today's Subject: Animal Rescues
The word Rescue, means everything from firefighters to rescue organizations for specific animals and specific breeds of animals. Today's diary is primarily concerned with volunteering at, and adoptions from, shelters and providing foster care for animals.
"Saving the life of one animal may not change the world, but the world will surely change for that one animal." Unknown
Local Shelters - Volunteering and Adoptions
The Humane Society of the United States has an article that talks about the possible tasks and benefits for local shelter volunteers.

"I love to rescue animals.... The pounds were so crowded they were putting animals down almost immediately. Seven thousand dogs were put to sleep." Laura Dern, on the impact the 1994 Northridge earthquake in LA had on dogs, and how she saved one of them.
This video runs about a minute and a half. It talks about an annual adoption event that takes place in October. It does have some nice coverage of the positive effects on humans and animals involved in adoption.
"He cannot be a gentleman that loveth not a dog." - Old English Proverb
Fostering
Sometimes animals need extra care while being treated for injuries or illnesses. Foster "parents" provide the needed care until the animal has recovered enough to be adopted, or in the case of wild animals, released back into the wild.
Other times cats or dogs who are nursing a litter of kittens or puppies need a foster home away from the activity of a shelter. When baby animals have lost their mothers special care can be provided in a foster home.
Many of the P-W people help at shelters and/or foster animals in need. In an old Pootie Diary, there was a story about a fostered pootie named Sammy, posted by RenaRF. Sammy needed to be on medication for an upper respiratory infection. In four weeks he was a healthy, beautiful cat, and was readily adopted. As Rena says in her comment: FOSTERING SAVES LIVES.
At the link, you can read the whole story on Sammy, and the other three cats rescued from the same home. (There is also a photo of Sammy.) http://www.dailykos.com/...
Here is a video of a healthy Sammy at play:
Note: Most organizations pay for any medical care the fostered animals need while in the foster home.
Rescue Sites
There are many sites that address various types of rescues, for a wide variety of animals. Here is just one
http://www.pgaa.com/...
Pet Guardian Angels of America™ Helping to Keep Your Pets Safe_
http://www.pgaa.com/...
Here is a list from that site that has links to many organizations. The list includes everything from specific breeds of cats and dogs to Farm Animals and wildlife.
There are also lots of warnings at the site, as well as the links. Warnings like this one:
Please use caution when considering placing an animal with any one involved in animal rescue, or if you get an animal from a rescue/adoption agency. Get references and do some investigation on your own. Long-distance/sight unseen adoptions can be risky.
Rescues often involve first aid and/or vet care
Rescues involve adoptions
"We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made." -M. Acklam

Trap Neuter and Release (TNR)
There are many web sites that deal with TNR, here is just one.
http://www.neighborhoodcats.org/...
We have quite a few of the P-W people that have worked on TNR, and they would probably share information with anyone that is interested.
Sometimes, animals rescue humans.
"There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face." Ben Williams
Assistance animals - Usually dogs.
Most commonly used to assist people with blindness and hearing losses.
Monkeys are also used as assistance animals.
From Wikipedia - Helper monkeys are also listed as assistance animals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/...
. . . specially trained to help quadriplegics, other people with severe spinal cord injuries or others with mobility-impairments.
There is a lengthy training period for monkey, about 7 years.
From behind a wooden crate we saw a long black-muzzled nose poking round at us. We took him out — soft, wobbly, tearful; set him down on his four, as yet not quite simultaneous legs, and regarded him. He wandered a little round our legs, neither wagging his tail nor licking at our hands; then he looked up, and my companion said: "He's an angel!" John Galsworthy
This subject is much larger than I first envisioned, so there might be more diaries on rescues at a later time.
