The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Rain, sun, wind...insects, birds, flowers...meteorites, rocks...seasonal changes...all are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
March 2015
Salish Sea, PNW
I'm back in the kayak after a few weeks with a shoulder injury. Haven't strength yet to do much paddling, but at least I could drift by the shore the other day. Calm wind, quiet, a nice spring day. A few photos to share ~
Along the shore, red-barked twisty-branched madronas, some draped with golden matted lichen strands:
I was so still, not paddling, an otter seemed surprised to see me there. I heard a splash and turned around.
It looked at me for a few moments, then dived and surfaced a ways further down the shore.
Being out in the water sometimes wildlife is less wary of a person, especially if you're not making much noise. Buffleheads are very skittish ducks, but here I was able to see a pair paddling by slowly. Many birds are paired up now like this.
That's it for me today. Sure feels nice sometimes to just drift and listen and watch for a while.
The Bucket is open for nature observations from your part of the world.
