I describe myself as a Jesusian to differentiate myself from Christians.
In fact, I am an agnostic, transgender follower of Jesus who practices in a Unitarian Universalist Church. Now there is enough cognitive dissonance in that for most people, that it might well cause their heads to explode, but UU's get it.
I do not believe in God. Nor do I actively disbelieve. Both belief and absolute disbelief require more faith than I have. I am also a post-op transsexual, 12 1/2 years post-op at this point, and I have been a UU for 18 years now.
It took me nearly that long in UU...for me to have the courage to look into the Bible for my own self...and to that end, I started with "The Life And Morals Of Jesus Of Nazareth" which we UU's refer to as "The Jefferson Bible" and it can still be obtained through Beacon Press.
Today, I am a follower of Jesus. I follow - as best I can...the actual life example Jesus set for us...with humility, and with compassion for all and malice towards none. I admit I sometimes fall short in that area, but I do try.
I follow the secular teachings of Jesus...about how we should treat our fellow human beings. As a Jesusian, I believe we would have a better, kinder, nicer, gentler world if more of us were to follow the life example, and the secular teachings of Jesus which we can find in the Bible.
There is no need to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
As a Jesusian (and since I coined the term I feel free to define it) I am not required to believe in God...although I am free to do so, should I decide to do so. I am also not required to abandon science, knowledge, learning and education. I am not required to believe in things which go against what I know of science and nature.
Because one is not required to believe in God...as a Jesusian...one is therefore not required to believe Jesus was the son of God...or that Jesus has any Divine aspect whatsoever.
In fact, a Jesusian need not even believe Jesus was a real guy....but a Jesusian knows that Jesus was a COOL GUY!! Read for yourself, and see if I am right.
Jesus...and by extension, God (if he exists at all) is NOT, WAS NOT, and NEVER WILL BE....what these fundamentalist whackjobs WISH he was!
I practice in a UU church, because this is the only place where my own relationship with Jesus is understood, appreciated and respected.
In fact, I say Jesus was a UU and never knew it. How about YOU? Are you, maybe, a Jesusian?
As to the UU, I say that we are a non-creedal, non-denominational church that draws inspiration from many sources...but we all believe in and practice the kind of radical love Jesus spoke about.
Indiana needs to learn that radical love. And until they do, it seems to me perfectly acceptable (even by their own logic) to shun them, and boycott them until they do.
