This is going to be sort off topic but sort of on topic (how is that possible)?
I need to address this growing trend in the US (and world) of as soon as someone is considered, "wronged" or a "hero" or some other random title, immediately a Go Fund Me or crowdfunding or something is started in their name. When something goes viral it can mean literally 100's of thousands of buckaroos, but is it all entirely deserved?
Join me below the orange thingamajig of justice and power....
I've had a GoFundMe fundraiser for almost a year, started by me, because I have no husband or kids or many people in my life to start one for me. And my issues were, severe dental decay due to side effects of Sjogren's Syndrome, Parotid cancer and radiation therapy.
This fundraiser has raised a small sum, but not nearly the amount I need to get my goal of implant dentures, you see, even though the Sjogren's, cancer and radiation annihilated my teeth, which were once absolutely gorgeous, it's still considered cosmetic and not covered by ANY type of insurance. I've had full coverage dental insurance and even supplemental discount insurance plans, and neither would have made my goal of implant dentures even remotely affordable. So I made my own Go Fund Me page, to the mortification of my friends and family, but when you're in constant pain, can't eat, can't smile and pretty much don't leave your home unless you really need to, then desperate times call for desperate measures.
I made the darn page, I put up a picture of what I used to look like, which always makes me cry, and said, what the hell, everyone else is doing it.
But today, when I saw that "Memories Pizza" in Indiana was raking in $40,000+ after just six hours, I was horrified, and so, so angry!! So, an outright bigot, an outright discriminator can get heaps of cash thrown at them, and yet there are 100's if not 1000's of people on Go Fund Me desperate for help, and this is what gets the attention? I thought it was bad last summer when I started my fundraiser. First, there was "Hot mugshot guy" then "Worlds greatest potato salad guy" who raked in, I think, more than $26,000 (FOR FREAKING POTATO SALAD INGREDIENTS!!!!) What is the world coming too?
Last week there was a guy at Go Fund Me looking to raise funds for a plane ticket to essentially stalk his girlfriend on Spring Break - he couldn't afford to go with her and was afraid she'd cheat - so, commence the stalking fundraiser, and, you guessed it - he got more than enough to embark on his campaign of terror disguised as "True Love." As always I won't post my fundraiser here cause you guys are my last and only hope (Obi Wan!) and there are enough of us here struggling day to day to deal with my dental issues.
But why? Why is the American public, and possibly the world, so intent on giving their hard earned money to these terrible, terrible causes? Remember that Sheriff a few weeks ago, who so vehemently opposed the ACA and wound up having to raise money for medical bills on, of all places, Go Fund Me? And then sure enough, just seemed to rake it in? Hey, didn't he say something about charity always being there or churches or some such sh*t?
Anywho, I am so, so tired and now going to bed. After 7 years of no insurance, at least now for a whopping $300 bucks a month that I am barely able to afford, I can see a doctor and maybe keep the cancer at bay. Thank you Mr. President and the ACA (Obamacare!). Still want Medicare for All though.
Please, if you guys go to Go Fund me, please go through the many, many fundraisers, and try to find one or two that don't seem to be "popular" enough to warrant anyone's attention and give a few bucks - so many are there for medical bills, dental bills (lots of radiation peeps like me had their teeth destroyed) so many good folks that no one sees, no one pays attention to, who probably feel so alone and forgotten. And if you can't donate, just tweet their page, Facebook their page, Pinterest, Instagram, so many good people need help.
End of Righteous Rant!!!
