While the campgrounds in Glacier National Parks are closed until May, winter camping is allowed in the Apgar Picnic Area. The nice thing about winter camping is that it is free. On April 1, it changes to primitive camping (still in the picnic area, but with a camping fee) and on May 1 the campground opens. Photographs of a recent camping trip are to be discovered below the stylistic orange bear poop.
The Apgar Picnic Area:
The Picnic Area is on Lake McDonald and it is likely that some of the activities for the EPIC Glacier National Park Meet Up will take place here. The white stuff on the ground is called “snow” by the locals and will probably have magically disappeared by the time of the Meet Up.
The Apgar Campground:
While the campground is closed, it is always pleasant to walk through the area.
The Trail and the Oxbow:
The trail to the Oxbow Overlook is a paved hike-bike trail and dogs on leashes are allowed. It is a short, easy walk from the visitor center. I will be recommending this as one of the possible hikes for the Meet Up.
Apgar Village and Lake McDonald:
Apgar Village is situated on Lake McDonald and has a couple of motels, some gift stores, and a restaurant/general store/ice cream/latte place.
