Pink Full Moon
According to the
Farmers’ Almanac website, this springtime Full Moon was named a “
Pink Full Moon” by Algonquin tribes who lived in regions from New England to Lake Superior. This name is particularly apt for this total lunar eclipse as scientists believe the moon will not have time to get to the normal “blood red” color normally associated with total lunar eclipses, and instead will be a pink color.
The shortest total lunar eclipse of the century happens April 4, 2015 at 4.58am PDT and ends at 5.03am PDT. A total lunar eclipse happens only when the Moon & Sun are directly opposite one another and the Earth is in between. This is the third total lunar eclipse in what scientists call a tetrad – four total eclipses in a row separated by approximately 6 months each. A tetrad is fairly rare. For instance, the 300 years from 1600 to 1900 had no tetrads. This century we will have nine.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group gives Kossacks a safe place to check in, a daily diary where we can let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, earthquakes, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It also allows us to find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a Kosmail and ask to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
We do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.
NASA has a great video showing an animation of the April 4th total lunar eclipse here. For those of us in Australia, the Far East, New Zealand and west of the Mississippi the total lunar eclipse will be visible if skies are clear enough. Those east of the Mississippi, Europe, most of Africa and the Near East will only see a partial eclipse due to the sunrise. For real time viewing of the eclipse on your computer, watch the eclipse here.
April 2015 promises to be a great month for sky viewing (if the weather cooperates). See this NASA video for what and when.
Astrologically, this tetrad of lunar eclipses is about relationships and self. Think back to the last quarter of 2014. Many of you may have experienced people leaving your life in one form or another. The latter part of 2014 was about letting go. This eclipse asks us to focus on ourselves – to find our inner strength and pioneer a drive to trust in our own power, to not give our identity away to someone else, to define ourselves instead of letting others do it for us.
Have any of you experienced this in your life recently?
5:32 AM PT: ****5.28am PDT The clouds went away here and the eclipse is fabulous. The brevity of the total eclipse didn't seem to alter the color of the moon - it's definitely red. Really spectacular was the very top of the moon shining like a beacon. It was quite a sight. Hope you got to see it.******
6:50 AM PT: The Moon has set and the fog has rolled in. What perfect timing.
7:27 AM PT: **Off to work. Check back with y'all this pm.**
