Most of us have heard of the term 'Broken Window' policing, the idea that disorder leads to insecurity, fear, and ultimately crime. The theory is controversial and has led to the police disproportionate targeting of minorities, immigrants, and the indigent. Clearly disorder can lead to insecurity and fear. But to suggest that this environment enables crime? And how are the victims to be distinguished from the aggressors in this model?
Lets try to think of this in another light.
We have all seen the endless litany of video abuses by the police these last months, even years. One element that appears to be consistent throughout most of these videos is the profanity of the police. Let us start by calling this the 'Broken Window'. Most workplace environments would never tolerate vulgar or abusive language. Somehow police departments have become havens for the the most degrading language in the community. We should have zero tolerance for this behavior by paid public officials. To allow this language creates an unhealthy environment of fear, insecurity, and ultimately criminal police behavior.
Officer: treat your workplace as any other public servant should or find another job.
So, there's my thought experiment. Do with it what you will.
