When they were a minority some conservative think thanks came up with intelliegent, if wrong analysis of contemporary USA society. I grew up reading WF Buckely. Helped my vocabulary. There has long been a tension between the true Libertarian wing and the more traditional business wing of the party. Now we have a third party with its own agenda; the Evangelical Right. This cohort believes that the USA wss founed as a Christian country. The more well thought out ones believe 'freedom of religious' means you can choose to be any kind of Christian denomination, or maybe Jewish but that is the limit of allowable religions. Without a unifying religion, the conservative idea is society cannot hold together. It seems the dislike a powerful government but as fine with an all powerful church.
This little background serves to prepare us for the most blatant example of Right wing hypocrisy ever. The legislature ( the Lege) usually screams local control when say the EPA attempt to get them to follow a law or the Voting Rights act still applies. Howver if Denton, and actuall town, voted to ban fracking with in city limits the lege just passed a bill to remove that ability form cities. Luckily the bill to prevent cities form banning plastic bags id dying in committee. Now if someone wants to pollute, build McMansions, build a nasty plant it is the proerty owners right. Texas is all about local control. Except when a town ( usually Austin, but this time Denton) votes is a way that does not support the oil industry. This is unacceptable! The anti Frackin people did the petition right, got in on the ballot, and won, Apparently Texas, a one party oligarchy, can't let this stand. Anything good get ruled unconstituional however,
