I started a Gofundme account for my mother Ruth Streich to help pay her medical bills and keep her and her husband Robert (a veteran who has been disabled for over 10 years). It has got a great response from my social media friends but no coverage anywhere else and while it has got a few celebrity retweets and notices it got nowhere near the attention that fundraisers for hateful, violent or bigoted fundraisers receive.
It's beyond frustrating when you see campaigns like the Memories Pizza raise almost 1 million dollars because they spoke out against gay people. Officer Wilson and Zimmerman raised thousands of dollars after their shooting of unarmed black teens. It seems that America today wants to reward people for the wrong reasons and people who worked hard their whole life and played by the rules can't find the same support.
While America is divided on political lines and starting to be divided on racial, sexual and religious lines I would like to believe that most Americans have love in their hearts and it's only the extreme views that get the media coverage but it's sadly starting to look like my optimistic view might just be that optimistic and not reality. Michelle Obama once made a comment about being proud of America and was attacked mercilessly for it but to be honest if this is the new America I'm not sure that I am proud to be a part of it.
