On the eve of April 23, 1343 began the massive uprising across Northern Europe known as the Peasants' Revolt.
E's grandmother, who passed away not long after in 1992, aet 95, used to refer to this as "suur sõda" (the great war), never mind all the others since. Memories of generations upon generations still instilled in a collective memory when Estonian serfs (teo'orjad; editorial apostrophe added to indicate glottal stop) dared rebel against their Danish overlords.
Of course it did not end well; farms torched and hundreds tortured to death for their insolence.
The memories still remain. Independence lost, regained, lost, and regained yet again.
Even now, bonfires are lit in memory of the time when the fires signalled that the time is nigh!
