This really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The only real surprise is just how fast it happened.
From ABC News...
A week before a closely watched U.S. Supreme Court hearing on the issue, public support for gay marriage reached a new high in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, with 61 percent of Americans – more than six in 10 for the first time – saying gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry legally.
Identical or similar majorities favor gay marriage on two key issues before the court: Sixty-one percent oppose allowing individual states to prohibit same-sex marriages. And 62 percent support requiring states to recognize gay marriages performed legally in other states.
Right now more than half the country has legalized same-sex marriage. Yet despite all of the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the faux-Christians on the right, here's what hasn't happened.
- America hasn't suffered the 10 plagues of Egypt.
- The country hasn't been destroyed by floods, fire, or meteors.
- The Earth hasn't opened up and swallowed all the Gay folk in the country.
- The rapture hasn't happened to uplift the righteous, leaving us heathens here to go "Hunger Games" for the few remaining resources until we all kill each other.
Furthermore, same sex marriage hasn't resulted in people marrying their children, their pets, or their furniture. It hasn't resulted in the deterioration of the family unit. And the sanctity of "opposite marriage" is, for better or worse, about as strong as it was 19 years ago when President Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law.
In less than a week, the Supreme Court will begin hearing oral arguments on the issue of same-sex marriage. And so-far the only arguments the opposition have been able to muster against it all pretty much boil down to "My Bible tells me so." Yet of the 30+ countries around the world that have either national or regional legalized same-sex marriage or protections for same-sex couples, none of them have been wiped from the face of the Earth by God's wrath. It would seem to me that either God doesn't really care who we mortals share our beds with, or he just isn't paying attention. So what happens to your biblical arguments against marriage equality when all of your worst biblical predictions...don't?
And here's another morsel of irony for you. Of all the countries that ban and/or penalize homosexuality (in some cases punishable by death), most of them seem to be either third world, war torn, and/or dead ass broke.
Maybe God is paying attention, just not to the people you think.
Wed May 06, 2015 at 1:55 PM PT: Just a bit of noteworthy follow up. It would seem that the big guy (or gal) upstairs also hasn't taken much notice of a recent NBC/WSJ poll that indicates that Americans are MORE comfortable with a Gay presidential candidate than an Evangelical one.
Whatever will the Bible thumpers do when they realize the rapture to which they're so looking forward has apparently been CANCELED.
