How Corporate America Invented Christian America
Many of us on the Progressive left have been seriously upset and concerned about the ongoing Christian creep distorting the democracy in the U.S politics for years.
Well, this article sure explains it.
How one reverend’s big business-backed crusade altered the political landscape.
It was a watershed moment—the beginning of a movement that would advance over the 1940s and early 1950s a new blend of conservative religion, economics and politics that one observer aptly anointed “Christian libertarianism.” Fifield and like-minded ministers saw Christianity and capitalism as inextricably intertwined, and argued that spreading the gospel of one required spreading the gospel of the other. The two systems had been linked before, of course, but always in terms of their shared social characteristics. Fifield’s innovation was his insistence that Christianity and capitalism were political soul mates, first and foremost.
It was clear to me that our government has been hi-jacked by the Corporate Control Freaks, and I knew the Christian Control Freaks sure had their hands in politics, but until I read this article I didn't realize they were Really working Hand-in-Hand.
I use to be quite passionate about religion, until it no longer 'served' my needs. And likewise, I use to be quite passionate about politics (it seemed to substitute for 'my' religion at the time). Not liking the religious tone of politics now-a-days, my passion for it has also ceased.
In my personal progressive human growth, seems I unshackled myself from the real enemies of the state and rightly so. I've un-grouped, un-labeled and now just observe and relish some real freedom. Hope more folks do the same.
What a sham of real democracy we live under.
Peace.
