As everyone knows, the arguments about marriage equality were given before the Supreme Court this week. I haven't read any of the live blogs, and only a little of the coverage. And I know there are few 'places' on Earth the Supremes are LESS likely to visitmuchlessconsider than an obscure Friday KTK diary on Daily Kos. Yet, here I am, writing to them, all the same.
More below the fleur de kos!
I realize the Constitution provides for state handling of many issues, but what I don't see is the Constitution allowing states to artificially provide rights ONLY to a privileged, discriminatory headupitsass in-group. Why would the founders ever wish to enable fair and consistent rights in one state, and then allow those same rights to be denied (indeed, trampled!) in an adjacent state? The clear answer is that they wouldn’t.
No, I am writing you tonight to tell you in plain English why you must decide in favor of marriage equality. If it’s right in California (and it damned well IS!), it’s right in Alabama. If it is right in New York, it is right in South Carolina. Right is right, fair is fair. On deep levels the people know this, too.
But the real reason is that the genie is out of the bottle, and canNOT be put back. You can’t tell people they can get married and then tell them that they can’t. You can’t tell them that they could get married, but that it was a mistake that they were allowed to, and that now they can’t, and, worse, the marriages they thought the state was recognizing are now no longer recognized. It would be a totally separate - and far more egregious! - injustice.
If you throw reason (and humanity and justice and and and!) to the winds and decide the other way on this, beware. Your decision won’t last very long. And the society will pay the price. Even people heretofore oblivious to the ‘crazy’ will have been given a clear lens with which to see it. And perhaps the elections will deliver what we need most: Not JUST a new Democratic president, but also perhaps even Congressional majorities to give us the Supreme Court justices we need and deserve.
Thanks for reading tonight, Kibitzers! Hope your weekend is a terrific one!

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
