With Prince William by her side, Princess Kate, gave birth to a daughter at 8:34am local time (3:34am EDT) at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital. The baby girl weighs 8lbs 3oz. Her Royal Highness and child are both doing very well.
Mid-afternoon, Prince William picked up his son, Prince George, and brought him to the hospital to introduce him to his baby sister.
As per protocol, the Queen was the first to be apprised of the news. Time is then given for all other family members to be notified before the public is informed.
The official announcement came from Kensington Palace, the couple's London residence, 2½ hours after the birth. Public notification will also be posted at the Queen's London residence, Buckingham Palace. That announcement will be inscribed on ivory paper and signed by Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Surgeon Gynaecologist to The Royal Household and Mr Alan Farthing, Surgeon Gynaecologist to HM The Queen, both of whom attended the birth of Prince George. The announcement will then be transported from the hospital to Buckingham Palace where it will be placed in a wooden frame and mounted on the same gilt easel used for the births of Prince George and his father, Prince William.
The announcement wouldn't be complete without the appearance of the Town Crier:
Oh yay! Oh yay! Oh yay! On this day, the second of May, in the year 2015, we welcome with humble duty, the second born of their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Princess is fourth in line to the throne. God save the Queen!
Awaiting the birth were many enthusiastic royal watchers who began gathering outside the hospital from the beginning of April. This dedicated couple were there so long they made friends and happily appeared in a selfies with the local police.
Terry Hutt is described as a royal superfan. He celebrated his 80th birthday while camped out at the hospital. "I'm so excited that I can't talk to you all that much. It's been a long wait but it's all been worth it," he said.
