Dateline October 22, 1962 — US President John Kennedy addresses the nation on television to announce a blockade of the island nation of Cuba. Kennedy did this because the Soviet Union was near completion of nuclear missile launch sites there. It is widely considered the hottest point of the long Cold War. I can’t even imagine what would happen today should someone try something similar.
But first, a word from our sponsors ...

The Cuban Missile Crisis didn’t begin or end on October 22 but it was the day that the President addressed the nation to prepare it for what what was happening and what might happen. It was a turning point in world history and it didn’t wind up with mass devastation and destruction.
I shudder to think what might ha[[en should a nuclear power try to place nuclear missiles within short strike distance of DC or New York. DJT is trying to blow up the world over North Korea as it is. There is no way I would trust him to be able to defuse an international nuclear crisis. Just wouldn’t do it.
I’m starting to come out of my self imposed exile but it is slow. This is all I have tonight. Take care of each other and work like hell to put some Dems in office next year.
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
