Last night, my husband and I were discussing the fatal bush crash in Flushing, Queens that occurred Monday (9/18). More details had come out, including the fact that the driver of the charter bus who caused the crash had been fired from the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) in 2015 following a DUI (driving under the influence) conviction. It’s since come to light that the charter company, Dahlia Travel and Tours, has a history of issues regarding driver violations, bad practices, and fatal crashes.
In the course of our discussion about this, I proposed that there should be a law where if a company exceeds X number of violations, it should be shut down. Not just any violations, but violations that speak directly to the core of the business. In this case, Dahlia Travel is a transportation company, so after, say, 5 violations in a 3 year period related to transportation/driving, their business license should be revoked. Similarly an accounting firm that has X violations in a Y period related to tax fraud would have to close, that sort of thing. Violations that weren’t related to the core business wouldn’t necessarily count against it.
Of course, if we’re in the fantasy land of “if I could make any law I wanted”, we’d have no electoral college, universal healthcare, restrictions on abortion removed, and a basic minimum income guaranteed for all citizens.
And, if you’re in need of a smile tonight, this tweet video made me laugh:
So, what about you? If you could wave a wand and enact any law without having to go through Congress, what would it be?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
As always, this is an open thread and nothing is off topic. What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
Also tonight, my thoughts & prayers are with those in Maria’s path. DOV has a diary up with Puerto Rico updates, and you can follow the Daily Kos Weather Center group for more.
