For those that don’t know, my former career was in professional kitchens. It is a hot, dirty world full of bad life choices and peer pressure. Many of us don’t have retirement plans much less plan on reaching the age of dotage. It was one of the reasons I got out. I would like to be able to wander around spouting silliness and tweeting tomfoolery.
But first, a word from our sponsors ...

Missy Robbins is a revered New York chef who recently released a cookbook-memoir called Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner... Life: Recipes and Adventures from My Home Kitchen.
But success in the grueling world of restaurant cooking took a toll, in sacrifices of time, health, and relationships. So in 2013 Robbins hung up the title of executive chef to explore life outside of the restaurant.
...
Intimate, engaging, and filled with Robbins’s signature thoughtful, ingredient-driven cooking, this cookbook gives readers the secrets to delicious and varied home cooking within a poignant story of self-discovery.
I certainly wish I had thought of this approach to my retirement from the culinary world. Of course, I still could write a book of restaurant essays. The question is, who would want to read it? I certainly am no celebrity, even in the worlds I moved in. My book would have to be titled Stories of a Middling Line Cook or something like that.
The New York Post released a great interview with Robbins. She seems to have found some balance.
I’m no longer afraid to set boundaries. I’ve incorporated some non-negotiables into my schedule, such as my pilates training appointments. Unless something truly urgent comes up, that time is not available to anyone but me.
There’s no question that this made me a calmer manager. I’m a more empathetic person now, and a better listener. I’m doing this for different reasons now: All my business partner and I want is a restaurant where our team is happy, we’re cooking great food, and we’re giving great hospitality and creating a great vibe.
Food is still my happy place, and I definitely still eat pizza and pasta and ice cream — only now I do it in moderation.
and now, on to the Tops ...
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
