I love to begin the day by reading the newspaper…A real physical newspaper. If I don’t have it in my hands first thing, the day just doesn’t start right for me.
My first job was working in the circulation department at the Daily World in Aberdeen, WA. I was never interested in going into journalism, the thing I disliked the most in school was writing papers…and writing for a living…ugh! However the processes involved in putting out a newspaper every day was extremely fascinating to an 18 year old. I have much respect for those who do that work.
One of the first things I did once out of the dorm and living in an apartment was to get a couple of newspaper subscriptions. First was the Seattle Post Intelligencer. I was familiar with that paper due to the fact that my folks had a subscription when I was growing up. I also subscribed to the local daily rag to keep up on the goings-on around my college town, now that I was part of the community at large.
My favorite Paper
The Seattle PI was the more progressive of the two daily Seattle papers, and that’s why I chose it (although the conservative hand of Randolph Hearst seemed to drop onto the editorial page when it came time to endorse candidates, in my opinion). It was a morning paper, and that fit my schedule. I was also pleased when a friend from high school got her first job in journalism on the staff of the PI doing lifestyle stories.
Some of the notable employees in the 150 years of the PI have been authors E. B. White, Frank Herbert and Tom Robbins. I have always been a fan of editorial cartoonist David Horsey, an important part of the paper for over 30 years.
Another plus was that the PI had the New York Times Crossword. I got the crossword gene that from both parents, who would take turns solving the daily puzzle, carefully erasing it after completion to pass it off to the other. Sunday’s puzzle would lay on the dining room table all day for whoever wished to spend a few minutes working at it.
The Post Intelligencer Globe was first installed in 1948. A University of Washington art student, a classmate of my dad’s, won the design contest. It is now an official city of Seattle landmark.
In the 80’s, the Hearst Corporation entered into a Joint Operating Agreement with the Seattle Times. The PI was to still be an independent paper, but The Times would handle the printing, etc. After years of conflict, The Times was able to exit the agreement, and the PI went to a strictly digital format 2005, and I was bummed out as it became a shadow of its former self.
The Seattle Times by that time had also converted to a morning paper, but I was a little hesitant about subscribing, due to my long-term loyalty to the PI. The final lure for me…they picked up the New York Times Crossword, and so I relented.
I have always felt that it’s important to support local media, especially the newspapers. They provide the resources to follow the activities of government, and do in-depth stories that take months, or perhaps years, to bring forth to the public. While I may not be fond of writing, I do like to read. Sadly the trend these days is media concentration, a lot of that due to economic pressures that have developed over the years, the internet being one cause. I will continue to be a subscriber, I think it’s important.
