Good evening, kibitzers. Tonight’s diary will be heavier in pictures and lighter in words than usual. I just got home with a couple of hours to spare, so I’m slapping something together!
On Thursday night, the BF and I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a mini-vacation to San Antonio. And I do mean mini—about 24 hours in total. I’d only been to San Antonio once previously (for research, blech), and it was on our list of places to go together, so we decided that right before the beginning of the semester was a perfect time. And it was just what I needed. We had no plans other than a hotel room, but we knew that the Riverwalk was somewhere we wanted to go. (No, the Alamo was not on our list of places to go. I only need to be disappointed with the Alamo once, thanks.)
If you’ve never been to San Antonio, the Riverwalk is a city park and system of walkways one story below the rest of the city, along the banks of the San Antonio River. There are shops, restaurants, and hotels all along the Riverwalk, and it almost feels like a little city in and of itself. It’s very cool. We walked the pathways and checked out some of the shops, and we noticed several boats full of people go by. Eventually, we stumbled upon the boat tours ticket center, and I was like, “I kinda want to go on a boat ride.” At $12 each, it was well worth the money, but we felt a bit out of place on our boat (I noted that we were the youngest people on the boat by at least four decades, and he noted that he was the only person of color on the boat). But it was quite relaxing—and I was able to snap several pictures I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. All in all, it was a good decision.
After our Riverwalk excursion (which ended up lasting all evening), we decided that the other thing that we must do in San Antonio is eat Tex-Mex. After some research, we decided on La Fonda on Main, which is apparently a local Tex-Mex institution. We were not expecting what we got—I mean that in a good way. It was an amazing experience from beginning to end. We had to wait about an hour for a table, but they actually bring you chips and salsa and appetizers while you wait (which, as it turned out, might not have been the best idea…two baskets of chips later as we waddled to our table). The food itself (or, at least, the plating) was anything but standard Tex-Mex, which usually does not make for good food porn. And the flavor was A+ along with presentation. Totally worth the $80 we blew on it. Here was our dinner:
What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
