can be seen in an article for tomorrow’s Washington Post titled Being a mother in Hawaii during 38 minutes of nuclear fear. The author, Allison Wallis, lives on the North Shore of Oahu and is a graduate student at the University of Hawai’i.
The piece begins like this:
We knew there was a big swell coming in, so when the alarm blared on my phone at 8 a.m., my first sleepy thought was that we were flooding and needed to evacuate. It’s the waves, I thought drowsily. Then I read the notice on my phone.
“Emergency Alert BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
I am not going to quote more.
I am posting only because I want to be sure people are aware of it.
I remember nuclear “duck and cover” drills in the 1950’s.
This incident seemed real to people in Hawai’i in large part because of the back and forth threats with North Korea.
I wonder if we will all have to start practicing and preparing?
I live 4 miles from the Pentagon. That caused to me to write a piece in 2006 called Living in a bulls-eye — whether as a target of terrorism or of a nuclear missile, I know that an attack on the United States could again put those of us here in serious risk.
Which is why I hope to God or whatever that there is someone to reign in the blithering asshole in the White House whose words and actions increasingly put us more at risk.
Please, read the linked article from the woman in Hawai’i.
