The 2018 midterm elections are already off to an early start with the special election happening in Pennsylvania in March:
State Rep. Rick Saccone appears poised to get a major boost for his Congressional bid later this month: A visit from Vice President Mike Pence.
Mr. Pence “is jumping into the midterm elections, planning visits soon to Nevada and Pennsylvania and helping recruit a candidate in Ohio amid an aggressive push to retain Republican control of Congress,” the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. “Mr. Pence is planning to visit western Pennsylvania later this month to help Republican Rick Saccone in a March 13 congressional special election.”
Patrick Geho, Mr. Saccone’s campaign manager, confirmed that there had been discussions about a visit.
“We’ve been asked about some potential dates, but I don’t think there’s anything confirmed at this point. We certainly welcome the vice president based on his record and his accomplishments,” he said.
Mr. Saccone is facing Democrat Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania’s 18th District after former Congressman Tim Murphy resigned this past fall. The special election is set for March 13.
Pence is also trying to bail out this loser:
Pence is also set to travel to Nevada later this week for an appearance with Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.), who is facing a tough re-election bid this fall.
Beyond that, Pence is also trying to help recruit a GOP Senate candidate to challenge Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). Josh Mandel, a Republican who had previously launched a bid against Brown, dropped out of the race last week.
Republicans are working to hold onto their congressional majorities in 2018, as Democrats hope to capitalize on President Trump's low popularity to make gains in GOP-held districts.
Pence acknowledged in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the president's party typically sees losses in the midterm elections, but said that he believes the economic growth will ultimately propel Republicans to victory.
Right, because Mike Pence did a bang up job helping Ed Gillespie (R. VA) win the Governor race last November. Oh, wait, no that didn’t happen. Either way, we need to get ready to pull off some more Doug Jones-style victories and usher in a big blue wave.
