During the Civil War, the Burkles, an immigrant family from Germany, operated a livestock yard from a farmhouse on Second Street in Memphis. According to family lore, it became a stop along the “Underground railroad” that smuggled escaped slaves from the South to freedom in Canada. The house is now a museum.
The tour includes the cellar, where runaway slaves were hidden. There were rumors that several houses in Memphis were interconnected by underground tunnels that allowed escaped slaves to be moved back and forth, but nobody has ever found any such tunnels.
Alas, like many historical houses, there is no photography permitted inside, but here are a few photos of the outside.
