Charleston, SC- Best Friends of Lowcountry Transit is hiring students (including non traditional students) and other willing citizens to work as community transit organizers in Charleston, North Charleston and Summerville. Pay is $10 an hour.
Organizers will work on people to people outreach to residents, businesses and institutions distributing literature, collecting feedback and working at events. All work will be on or near CARTA bus lines and a car is not needed for doing this job. We provide bus passes or pay bus fare when needed. The goal of this work is to build public understanding and support to assure proper use of the 600 million dollars in funds our organization was able to obtain through the November 2016 Half Penny Sales Tax vote in Charleston, which is threatened. Some website work and data entry is available. A bicycle may be useful for some parts of the job.
Experience riding public transit working on political or civic campaigns is helpful. We will cooperate in independent study efforts focusing on urban planning, sociology, political science or other related fields. Speaking Spanish would provide additional opportunities for work in the Latino community.
Work will begin with some training in March and a major outreach effort is expected to start in April and May. Regular work will continue through to May 20.
More about our organization can be learned on our Facebook Feed at https://www.facebook.com/BFLowcountryTransit/
Applicants will be required to file an W9 form and proof of their legal right to work in the United States. We do not discriminate on the basis of sex, ethnicity, affectional orientation, or disability. Our work provides special opportunities to accommodate disabled workers.
