Have you heard of microdosing? I’ll bet you have. It’s currently all the rage in Silicon Valley. People at high tech companies microdose with LSD or Psilocybin to enhance their brain function and efficiency at work. What is microdosing? It’s taking very small amounts of mind-altering substances below any threshold of tripping. Since these substances cause changes in brain function, taking micro amounts apparently enhances the way people feel. Every report I’ve read regarding microdosing says people feel better, have superior mental function and are thus able to do more. They just feel a lot better.
I don’t know anyone from the Silicon Valley personally that is doing this. However, there have been three patients of mine that have been doing this and told me about it. Each of them work for very successful companies and have jobs that are pretty stressful .
One person gets overwhelmed and feels anxiety. This then starts her to go down the road of wondering about her self-worth. If this goes on for long she feels depression creeping in. She confided in me that she’d been microdosing LSD for a few months. I asked her about her experiences. She told me it doesn’t allow any anxiety to start and that she’s more clear-headed and does her job much better. She did it for a few months then stopped to see if there was any difference. After a couple months without microdosing she starting to feel “that old anxiety again.” So far she hasn’t started doing it again but told me she plans to because it definitely works for her.
In keeping with the received wisdom, those taking LSD microdoses reported a remarkable increase in feelings of determination, alertness, and energy, as well as a strong decrease in feelings of depression. Interestingly, however, Fadiman noted that microdosing LSD didn't seem to work out as well for those who entered the study on the basis of anxiety alone—microdosing LSD actually seemed to increase their anxiety. However, those participants who cited anxiety and depression, rather than just anxiety, noted an overall increase in their feelings of mental wellbeing.

Two other patients microdose with magic mushrooms. Both told me they feel better and have a sense of calmness knowing everything is alright. I know there is research using psilocybin in patients who have terminal cancer and are very anxious and afraid of dying. When given magic mushrooms under optimal “set and setting” condition with a “guide” or counselor, their fear vanishes because they see themselves as part of the whole of life. It isn’t a religious-type of thing either. It’s just an enlightened awareness of understanding that “it’s all alive” they lacked before of which they are a part.

Study: Psilocybin Mushrooms Stimulate Growth Of New Brain Cells
In a study conducted by the University of South Florida and published in 2013 in the Experimental Brain Research journal, researchers measured the effects of mushrooms on mice that had been conditioned to fear certain stimuli.
The results were striking: Not only could psilocybin, the main active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms, help them get over their fear, it promoted cell growth and regeneration in their brains.
What’s more, the psychedelic mice showed growth in new brain cells, perhaps erasing memories of the fear response. Researchers think that the psilocybin is binding to brain receptors that stimulate growth and healing, acting on the hippocampus, a small part of the brain that is essential to learning and forming memories. Since PTSD is thought to result from a similar response in which patients cannot separate a stimulus from a traumatic event, psilocybin could perhaps help them heal their brains just like it did for the mice.

I know a number of folks who microdose with cannabis as well. Primarily it calms them down so they just feel better overall by doing amounts so small they don’t get stoned at all. Personally, I can tell you that I find cannabis to be very soothing. I know that’s not true for all people. With any substance, there are going to be a variety of individual experiences.
I prefer how I feel using a bit of cannabis. Little things don’t bother me as much. Feelings of frustration don’t crop up frequently. And my experience of time changes too. For whatever reason time seems to slow down. Also, when I focus internally, I don’t sense any feeling of “internal tightness” which is what stress feels like for me and everyone in truth. It’s best to tame it before it causes things like hypertension if it goes on far too long.

There are also ample stories about people with PTSD from being in wars or other reasons being treated quite successfully with MDMA (Ecstacy). I wrote a diary about that long ago and used a youtube video about a local veteran who lives right here who cured his PTSD using it four times with the help of a psychotherapist while doing it.
Do you know of anyone who microdoses?
