Senators from both parties sounded the alarm but my diary title emphasizes that this alert is bipartisan.
“If we start to fix this system tomorrow, we still might not be in time,” chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Richard Burr of North Carolina, said about the midterm elections.”

More ominously, Senator Feinstein threatened to out states that refuse to alert the public that they were attacked in 2016. She needs to do it, not threaten it.
“America was the victim. America was attacked,” Feinstein shot back. “I think states have to know that it’s going to be known by the public.”
Nielsen tried to allay Feinstein’s concerns by saying DHS was developing “a baseline” that will be “very transparent” laying out states that are not complying with federal recommendations.”
But Feinstein was not having it. “I’m through with this,” the senator said, indicating she was prepared to out states that do not make attacks known to the American public.
This is all very dangerous situation. Without democracy, only further breakup of the United States remains and I get the impression Republicans would be fine with a civil cold or even hot war, considering they know demographics do not favor them in coming decades, and they do not want to give up power.
The tactics Republicans have used to erode democracy themselves, with election tampering themselves (vote suppression, vote purges, posting police and now secret service at polling stations), shows they cannot be trusted to handle this crisis.
Nobody can count on an administration that benefited from and encouraged the Russian hacking of election 2016, who is led by a man who glamorizes dictators and actually said he likes the idea of president for life, to do anything about it. Clearly democracy is at a cross-roads.

Another important yet ominous point to make is the recent collaboration between Trump and Sessions. This is demagoguery pure and simple and another indicator of fascist intent.
Portugal and other European countries have shown the path to actually lowering drug use (harm reduction/health approach). Will Trump and Sessions be putting to death the makers of Oxycontin, who knowingly pushed a deadly product?
"Congress has passed several statutes that provide the Department with the ability to seek capital punishment for certain drug-related crimes," Sessions said in a statement. "I strongly encourage federal prosecutors to use these statutes, when appropriate, to aid in our continuing fight against drug trafficking and the destruction it causes in our nation."
