The Senate voted 57-42 Thursday to confirm Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State, the first, to quote Meteor Blades, "climate science-denying, torture-backing, military-first, xenophobic" hater of Islam to be the nation's chief diplomat. Six Democrats—Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Joe Manchin (WV), Joe Donnelly (IN), Doug Jones (AL), Bill Nelson (FL), Claire McCaskill (MO)—and independent Angus King (ME) voted with Republicans.
The first major order of business Pompeo is likely to blow up is the Iran nuclear deal. Meteor Blades, again:
One of the first diplomatic matters Pompeo will be dealing with is the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). And given both his and his boss’s stances on that subject, the possibility that the multilateral agreement will soon be an historical footnote is quite possible. […]
If Trump-Pompeo decide to break it by unjustly reimposing sanctions despite Iranian compliance, the changes Tehran will develop nuclear weapons will be enhanced. Not exactly an auspicious beginning for a new beginning at the State Department.
Chances of Democrats actually blocking the nomination were dashed with the completely predictable capitulation of Republican Sens. Rand Paul (KY) and Jeff Flake (AZ). But on this one, it wouldn't have hurt a single one of them electorally to oppose him.
