Two U.S. Presidents have weighed in on Georgia’s 2018 gubernatorial race between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp. Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter have chosen to support Stacey Abrams.
On August 1, Obama gave his endorsement to Abrams for her unifying campaign. Here is that statement via StaceyAbrams.com.
“I am so excited to endorse Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia. She’s not running a campaign built on division or distraction; she’s running to lead one Georgia where everybody has opportunity, and everybody’s voice is heard. And she’s got the record of building consensus that shows she can deliver – with good jobs, great public education, expanded Medicaid, and secure, affordable health insurance for everyone. In a time when too many folks are focused simply on how to win an election, Stacey’s somebody who cares about something more important: why we should. That’s the kind of politics we should practice. That’s why I’m proud to give Stacey Abrams my support.” -Barack Obama
On Monday, Jimmy Carter declared his support as well. Here is his statement via the Associated Press.
“Stacey Abrams is the right leader for our changing state who has consistently championed the American values we share: equality for all, excellent public schools for our children, and an economy where families from Plains to Plainville and Pooler have the opportunity to get ahead," Carter said in a statement released by Abrams' campaign.” -Jimmy Carter
Abrams told AP on Tuesday that she was honored to receive support from fellow Georgian Jimmy Carter. May there be more prominent endorsements like this for Stacey Abrams, a healthy and supportive campaign—and a landslide win.
