No matter what job you have in a campaign, whether it is managing campaigns, working on data, cutting turf, making phone calls or just providing monetary support, the end goal is the same: making sure that our voters turn out to the polls and elect our candidates.
That’s why, no matter where I’ve been in a campaign, I always find value in going back out and walking a canvass on behalf of candidates. It is often too easy to get into our own heads and think about the big picture of a campaign, worrying about details, finances, ad buys, or any other variable a campaign runs into, but walking a district and talking to voters now and again can help remind even the most hardened political campaign worker of the value of our volunteers and paid campaign walkers.
Last week, we promoted Mobilize America. This week, I drove to Northfield, Minnesota, to walk for Angie Craig for Congress (MN-02).
What a time to be in Northfield! Every campaign should always keep as one of the key goals how we connect with our local community, making sure that our Democratic values aren’t just words we say, but are present in the actions of what we do. Gathering in the DFL office on Saturday morning, local representatives, canvassers and volunteers began to formulate how they could help their local community, and how the Craig campaign could help. Within hours, the Craig campaign took the word of the volunteers, and, as you can see above, plan to put her people to work on behalf of the community.
At the same time we were walking and working for Angie Craig, we ran into volunteers and staff out to support Tina Smith, a good sign that Minnesota Democrats are getting out everywhere to make sure their voters come out in November and help win some seats this election. A hearty hat-tip to Ken Martin, chair of Minnesota DFL for his work on making sure that volunteer efforts and campaign efforts stay focused on winning this November.
Connect! Unite! Act! is in large part about connecting our community to better opportunities to make an impact in our political climate. Canvassing districts everywhere in the country is a big part of that, and as always, it is important for us to show our commitment to partners like Mobilize America. Is there an event in your state you think should be next? Find it on Mobilize America and share a link below.
Have thoughts? Leave them in the comments! I’ll try to respond and see what we can do to help your campaigns, anywhere!
So, what’s your plan this week?
