Heck, I had no idea that Mark Twain lived in Connecticut …..
Samuel Clemens (“Mark Twain”) and his new wife Livy moved to Hartford CT in 1871 and began construction on this house, on Farmington Avenue, in 1873. They lived here for the next 18 years. Twain converted a part of the billiards room upstairs into a study, and it was here that he wrote classics like “Tom Sawyer”, “Huckleberry Finn”, and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”. In 1891, the family moved to Europe, and they sold this house in 1903. Today there are guided tours.
Just a block away is the house of Harriett Beecher Stowe, best-known as the author of the anti-slavery novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. The house was built in 1871, and she moved here in 1873, becoming Mark Twain’s neighbor. Stowe remained in the house until 1896, when she died in the upstairs bedroom.
Some photos from a visit to both houses (alas, as with most historical homes, photography is not allowed inside).
