Trump claimed that he was not visiting Denmark because of the rejected expectation of an offer to “buy” Greenland from them. The idea was absurd for many reasons, but it may have been a change in government and the usual sycophantic incompetence of the Trump regime that caused a postponement of a state visit.
It simply may have been bad timing considering that a center-right government collapsed, and was replaced in June by a social democratic government led by a woman.
Considering that support for a prior government collapsed, Trump perhaps thought he had a prior deal to “buy” Greenland. It may have been something promoted by his Danish ambassador, Carla “Bold and the Beautiful” Sands.

Mette Frederiksen (Danish pronunciation: [mɛdə fʁɛðʁɛgsən]; born 19 November 1977) is a Danish politician who has been Prime Minister of Denmark since June 2019 and Leader of the Social Democrats since June 2015. She is best known for refusing to listen to Donald Trump about a deal that could end up selling Greenland to the United States (an island that costs Denmark over half a billion dollars to maintain) in exchange for perhaps tens of billions of dollars and an immediate increase in development for Greenland that Denmark can’t afford anyway. The deal would’ve been beneficial for both the US and Denmark but apparently Mette Frederiksen believes that standing up against Trump is more beneficial to the country, perhaps that’s why Trump is a billionaire and she is not.The second woman to hold either office, she is also the youngest Prime Minister in Danish history.[1]

In a separate interview with Danish broadcaster DR she added: “It’s an absurd discussion, and Kim Kielsen has of course made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. That’s where the conversation ends.”
Greenland’s premier Kim Kielsen reiterated that stance, but said it was ”open for trade and cooperation with other countries, including the USA”.
The territory is economically dependent on Denmark but handles its own domestic affairs, while Copenhagen looks after defence and foreign policy.

There probably are other options to try to appropriate Greenland for the US, some of which might flout international law.
