There are a number of critical questions ALL Americans should consider in terms of the recent attacks on Saudi Oil fields other than Trump’s possible military response or his apparent subservient “arrangements” with Mr. Putin.
1- Would we prefer Trump to launch an all out war with Iran? Answer: No. Any such attack (by air I presume) would leave the Middle East in an even more unstable situation and the World supply of oil going up in even more smoke. And would be useless militarily without a ground attack which would cost thousands of American lives. And result in an even wider war.
2- Are all options bad because of Trump’s hostile, tough talk Iran policies? Answer: Yes. Trump owns this crisis, and in substance helped create it when he withdrew from Obama’s Iran nuclear deal. That said, continued conflict still threatens Saudi oil supplies. Which in case you haven’t noticed, the U.S. for years has been developing new oil sources anticipating just such a development. It’s one reason for the unwarranted aggression against Venezuela — to grab their oil supplies. There are no good options if you think in terms of America as a world Empire. But as a country and planet facing the run away threat of global warming, no escalating actions against Iran and eating a little behind the scenes “crow” makes a lot of sense. And might encourage more alternative energy production. This may be one time that Trump should take Putin’s “advice”.
3 - Won’t eating crow on the attacks on Saudi oil fields hurt U.S. interests in the Middle East? Answer: Avoiding a major conflict or war with Iran may actually help Trump’s chances of reelection. Which is ironic since I would put deposing him in next year’s election at the top of my list of priorities. And if you look at our country as both the world’s policeman or as a dominant Empire, it is probably against those type of interests. But if you look at the situation progressively, war rarely is the best solution for this or any other problem. And I would not want yet another U.S. oil war be the way we beat Trump. And he can be beat without yet another disastrous war leading to his defeat.
To summarize, we should not try to egg Trump into a war in hopes that it will lead to his defeat next year. I’m sure there is already plenty of pressure for war from the right without us jumping in and acting like fools. If we do that, we could even make such a war OURS as well — thus not leading to his defeat.
Let us remember that Saudi Arabia is a ruthless monarchy currently involved in flagrant and frequent war crimes against Yemen, which likely ordered the attack against the oil fields, even if they got some sort of assistance from Iran. The White House is not about to mention this “little” fact. Let us not fall into the trap of calling for an escalation of the conflict. And let us hope than none of the Democratic candidates fall into this trap.
