The big names keep on coming:
Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is planning a rollout for Michelle Obama’s endorsement, although there are questions around just how public a role the enormously popular former first lady will play in his campaign.
Sources tell The Hill that the Biden campaign’s early plans include a focus on remote fundraising and voter registration efforts.
The trick for Michelle Obama and the Biden campaign is finding the right balance for the pop culture icon, who could be a massive asset for the campaign but has never shown much enthusiasm for campaign politics.
"This week was President Obama's moment to enter the campaign. Of course Mrs. Obama supports Joe Biden and we will keep you posted on her plans," an Obama aide said.
The timing of the rollout is uncertain.
"We know what pretty much everyone in America does: Michelle Obama is probably the most beloved member of the Democratic party and her support is a big deal," a Biden aide said. "Any future announcement would reflect the incredible impact her voice has."
Howard Gutman, a former Obama administration ambassador, said that "the Biden campaign will take anything they can get" from the former first lady.
Along with this, Biden’s campaign is working on a huge Latino outreach:
A major Hispanic political advocacy group on Thursday launched Latinos con Biden, a digital campaign to garner Latino support for former Vice President Joe Biden's presidential campaign.
The Latino Victory Fund, the first major Latino organization to endorse Biden, put together the campaign, which will include a website, a weekly web series with top Biden endorsers and a multiplatform bilingual social media effort.
"In January 2021, there will be no learning curve for the next president of the United States. Our country will need an experienced leader who will hit the ground running on day one, and that candidate is Vice President Biden," said Luis A. Miranda Jr., chair of Latino Victory.
"Vice President Biden has consistently supported issues that align with the Latino community, including access to quality, affordable health care, job growth, and a prosperous economy, access to higher education and reducing gun violence," Miranda added. "He is committed to introducing and fighting for legislative immigration reform, including the protections of the Dream Act, within the first week of a Biden Administration. Latinos will rest assured knowing that they'll once again have an ally in the White House."
Latinos con Biden will count as a coordinated expenditure, meaning it will be federally limited in how much it can spend but will be allowed to coordinate its efforts with Biden's campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The financial structure also means the campaign could not have been launched during the primaries, as coordinated expenditures are only allowed to support a candidate in a general election.
And whether or not you like this endorsement, it’s still a big one:
Sen. Joe Manchin will endorse Joe Biden for president, putting to bed any thought that he might not support the Democratic presidential nominee this time around.
The conservative West Virginia Democrat said in an interview on Thursday that he’s working with Biden, the presumptive nominee, on an endorsement that will come in tandem with a plan to help shield his state from job loss. It’s not a given that Manchin would support Democrats’ presidential platform: He nearly pulled his endorsement from Hillary Clinton in 2016 after she suggested she’d put coal miners out of work, did not support President Barack Obama in 2012 and was recoiling at the thought of Bernie Sanders as Democrats’ nominee this year.
But Manchin has been talking to the Biden campaign since the former vice president won South Carolina’s primary, and said he feels comfortable with Biden and his outreach to Appalachia, where energy jobs are a key part of the economy and politics. Asked on Thursday whether he’d endorse Biden, Manchin replied: “I will, absolutely.”
And two more major organizations have endorsed Biden’s campaign. End Citizens United:
Today, I’m coming to you with a special announcement. End Citizens United is endorsing Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign. Through his entire career in politics, Joe Biden has been fighting for transformational change to our democracy.
That’s why we’re proud to endorse his campaign for president and will do all we can to ensure his victory. But to defeat Donald Trump, we’ll need to fight harder than ever before.
Can you chip in $5 to fight Trump’s Special Interest funded reelection campaign and elect Joe Biden?
Vice President Joe Biden has been fighting for transformational change to our democracy since his first year in the U.S. Senate, through his service as Vice President, and during his 2020 campaign.
He knows that if we want to make progress on the big issues -- from creating a fair economy, to lowering healthcare costs, to taking on the oil lobby -- we MUST end Citizens United:
But thanks to Citizens United, Republicans will spend over a billion dollars to re-elect Trump. He has Wall Street bankers, corporate special interests, and billionaires on his side trying to drown out our voices.
And they’d like nothing more than to defeat Joe Biden. They’re terrified because they know he’ll stand up to special interests and fight for us.
So we need you with us right now. Please, please stand with us in our endorsement of Joe Biden to end Trump’s Presidency this November.
Please chip in just $5 or whatever you can right now.
Together,
