I was raised catholic, went to catholic school for twelve years, sent my kids to catholic school, taught cathecism classes and then left the church after Benedict was made pope. The idea that anyone is ‘pro’ abortion is ludicrous. The fact that abortion has been such a political minefield is infuriating, especially to catholic and other democrats like me who can clearly see that the answers to decreasing abortions are much more complex than making a law against it, especially when that law only targets women.
Killing another person is definitely against the law, yet people are killed every day by cops in the line of duty, armies at war, or ordinary people in self defense. Can we please reframe the debate to discuss the REASONS women seek abortions, and take meaningful steps to make each baby and child feel welcomed and cared for, not just by the mother but by the community as a whole. That is what will reduce abortions.
Guaranteed income and time off for 18 months, free excellent daycare, good public schools that prepare for sustaining jobs, easy free access to health care and counseling, housing assistance, community centers with recreational activities, caring adoption services when needed: these are the things that will reduce the need for women to resort to something so drastic in their own self defense. The idea that anyone is carelessly and freely engaging in a procedure that not only ends a pregnancy but can also be life threatening is just a false narrative that needs to be stopped. How many republicans vote only on this issue? Let’s control it!
Democrats are pro life and believe in a woman’s right to choose!
