For the record, I believe in contemporary astronomy, not the flat earth BS. I think the universe is too big for God. There are billions of galaxies, billions of LY between them. I think some Christians prefer the fiat lux, 4000 years old, geocentric version because it makes us significant. The universe is so vast and we are orbiting a minor star in a minor galaxy. God is supposed to be completely present in every point in the universe. It seems that Earth would occupy only a little of his attention. The people of Earth could unite on our little world to be important in the big cosmos.
Monotheistic religions model the world as a divine kingdom schema, with the high God at the top ruling over a hierarchy of spiritual beings. The lower beings just have to obey their superiors, regardless of the consequences. I think instead we could practice loving those who are present to us, and being responsible for how it turns out. We have schemas for morality which tell us how to treat people. Rather than being guided by logic and telling the Gestapo about the Jewish people in the basement, we can show them love by denying their presence.
