Here in Hawaii we have our own little scandal that somewhat mirrors the national issues.
A Democratic representative in the state house resigned, and the governor had to appoint a replacement from the same party to fill the vacancy.
Three days after the resignation was announced, a woman named Bev Harbin, president of the Employers' Chamber of Commerce and friend of the Republican governor, joined the Democratic party.
Governor Lingle then appointed Harbin to fill the seat.
After the appointment was made, it was discovered and reported in the media that Harbin still owes the state $125,000 in back taxes and she had been convicted of passing bad checks in 1987.
Now the governor has asked Harbin to resign but she refuses.
