Their Next Trick: Resolve to Repeal the Law of Gravity

Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 04:55:05 AM PDT

Just when you think they can't get crazier, more obnoxious, or more full of themselves, the Southern Baptist Convention surpasses itself by approving a Resolution that questions the role of human activity's impact on global warming.  Excerpt from USA Today article:

"The SBC resolution, approved near the end of the denomination's annual meeting, acknowledges a rise in global temperatures. But it rejects government-mandated limits on carbon-dioxide and other emissions as "very dangerous" because they might not make much difference and could lead to 'major economic hardships' worldwide."

Question:  can you spot any difference between the crux of this Resolution and the "Leave No Oil Company Behind" plank in the GOP's platform?

Let us be not only fair, but thank the legions of Evangelicals around the country who do, most certainly, "get it":

"Environmentally concerned evangelicals, including megachurch pastors, Christian college presidents, and theologians, announced their support February 8 (2006) for a major effort to combat global warming.

"During a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington organized by the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN), a new coalition called the Evangelical Climate Initiative (ECI) released a statement signed by more than 85 evangelical leaders.

"The statement, Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action, says 'human-induced climate change is real,' and calls on the U.S. government to pass legislation establishing limits on carbon dioxide emissions—widely believed to be the primary cause of human-induced global warming."

Full article here.

And, while we're at it, the United Methodist Church's position on Global Warming:

"Among the priorities for this year is the issue of reducing global warming pollution. GBCS says that Congress’ action in 2007 to increase fuel efficiency standards as part of its energy bill is not enough. GBCS urges Congress to pass a comprehensive global warming legislation that reduces emissions and protects the vulnerable from both the result of global warming and the potential price hike from the legislation."

See here for full article, and here.

And the United Church of Christ's position here.  Excerpt:

". . . THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Twenty-second General Synod of the United Church of Christ:

recognizes the dangers of global warming and our biblical mandate as stewards of God's creation to be diligent in our efforts to decrease the emission of greenhouse gases;

affirms the greater responsibility of industrial nations and especially the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;

encourages local churches, Conferences and national agencies to engage in efforts to educate and advocate for ratification of the Kyoto Climate Change Treaty and to address their own lifestyles (institutional and personal) to assure the minimum production of wastes that threaten the environment. . ."

So, it's not all bad news, but it's maddening that this "church" (Southern Baptist Convention) has, apparently, become a most willing subsidiary of one of the worst and most irresponsible facets of Republican Party (among the many from which to choose).
