CNN: appalling Pentagon reaction

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 06:47:17 AM PDT

I saw a diary referencing this last night.
I found the official transcript this morning.

CNN's Pentagon correspondent report to Aaron Brown
This is from around 11:30pm 9/1/05:

MCINTYRE: And they seemed to question the motives of some of our reporters who were out there and hearing these stories from the victims about why they had so much sympathy for the victims, and not as much sympathy for the challenges that the government met in meeting this challenge.

Sheehan: "Why are they smearing me?"

Fri Aug 19, 2005 at 09:32:04 PM PDT

This is a blog entry from the Twin Cities' alt-weekly paper, City Pages. The writer was part of a national conference call Sheehan did with the press on Wednesday.

It's critical, but sympathetic. And while some will no doubt find offense in some parts, I think it also gets close to the raw emotion involved, as well as the toll this protest must be taking on Sheehan:

"The scrutiny against me, I'm willing to take it," the 48-year-old said in response to questions about her not paying taxes and her husband recently filing for divorce, before adding in the same breath: "I don't have a  thick skin, I'm very sensitive, and I don't take it very well."

For further contradiction, Sheehan had just said, minutes earlier, that the right-wing attacks on her were "despicable." "They already took my son from me, there's not much else they can do," Sheehan said. "Why are they smearing me? I'm not running for office, I'm a mother with a broken heart."

Crawford Counter-Protestors chant: "We Don't Care"

Fri Aug 12, 2005 at 05:10:56 PM PDT

My wife just called me from Camp Casey.
Counter-protestors showed up in a bus.
Don't know with whom or what they're affiliated.

After they arrived, the Sheehan supporters stood and sang "God Bless America."

The response?

A repeated chant of "We don't care. We don't care. We don't care..."

StarTribune: How DSM got into our paper

Sun Jun 12, 2005 at 05:55:52 AM PDT

The Minneapolis StarTribune has a detailed article by its Reader's Representative on how the Downing Street Memo came to be published in full on the editorial pages:

The back story reveals a lot about how news travels traditional routes and cyberspace at different velocities, about how the Internet is being used to influence media and about how those on the left and right have learned to puff up their feathers or grow small -- to foment coverage or strangle it.

It's a solid confirmation of how the efforts of individuals can definitely influence editorial decisions.

MN-GOP Rep. Seeks Retribution...

Mon May 30, 2005 at 06:59:30 AM PDT

...against a guy who dared write a complaint letter. It's not enough to accept the fact that some voters disagree with you. It's better to threaten the person's job.

In an article on the mixing of religion and politics in the MN state legislature, GOP State Rep. Larry Howes says the following to a weekly prayer group at the Capitol:

He then launched into another passion, concerning a letter someone had sent to Republican Representative Paul Gazelka, which disapproved of his support for a measure that would ban gay marriage. According to Howes, the author works for the Crow Wing County Human Services Department. "And I want you to know that I've already looked into de-funding that agency," he announced with a pointed look at Hall.

Note that it's not even a letter he received. It's  a letter received by another politician. Hell, it might have been an unfair or rude letter. Who knows?

It's still wrong to seek retribution against not only the letter writer, but everyone the letter writer works with, as well as the people served by that office.

CNN: Boo! This Headline Is Scary!

Wed Mar 23, 2005 at 01:04:56 PM PDT

Headline on CNN front page:

"Social Security fund may run out sooner"

It's about how the new Soc. Sec. trustees report predicts the trust will be "exhausted" in 2041.

Detail not revealed until fourth paragraph:

"That date is one year earlier than the 2042 date the trustees estimated in their 2004 report."

A one year change in an economic prediction garners that headline.  How pleased the administration must be with media coverage like that. I'm surprised they didn't use words like "broke", "bust" or "bankrupt" while they were at it.

MN-GOP: Fight! Fight! Fight!

Mon Mar 07, 2005 at 07:47:50 PM PDT

The MN GOP has some good in-house sparks flying this week:

So says former GOP Sen. Rod Grams after the MN Governor Tim Pawlenty joined the chorus to quickly coronate Rep. Mark Kennedy as the GOP nominee for the Senate seat being vacated by Mark Dayton. MN Sen. Norm Coleman had endorsed Kennedy almost immediately, too.

One year before a single caucus is held, delegate is chosen, or vote is cast.

AP's Bias on Kerry & Bush OBL statements

Fri Oct 29, 2004 at 04:56:49 PM PDT

Bush and Kerry both made short statements responding to the new Bin Laden tape. They're very similar.

Kerry's is here. Bush's is here.

The front page Yahoo story, "Bin Laden Videotape Fires Up Bush, Kerry" has this lead paragraph:

President Bush said Friday that "Americans will not be intimidated" by Osama bin Laden as a new videotape of the terrorist leader surfaced just before the election. Campaign rival John Kerry criticized Bush for failing to capture bin Laden earlier and said that "I can run a more effective war on terror."

Kerry said no such thing in his statement.
He said that during an interview earlier in the day. That fact is buried in deeper into the story.

And in another Kos diary we learn that Rove is already accusing the Kerry camp of playing poltics with the tape.

Bush & Civil Unions: What about the base?

Tue Oct 26, 2004 at 01:50:01 PM PDT

Do you think it was part of the strategy to unsettle the hardcore social conservatives a week before the election?

Some conservative groups expressed dismay Tuesday over President Bush's tolerance of state-sanctioned civil unions between gay people -- laws that would grant same-sex partners most or all the rights available to married couples.

Sure, that's some criticism, but is it enough to make them not vote for Bush? Shake out some undecideds? Regardless, any movement at this point can't be welcome. Quotes from specific conservative groups after the jump...

Another MN Republican for Kerry

Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 08:53:32 PM PDT

Last week it was an endorsement from former GOP MN Gov. Elmer Andersen. HERE it's a nice commenary from a GOP former state commissioner, Peter Gillette:

"For most of my adult life, I was a practicing Moderate Republican. Today, I am homeless, extinct, a dinosaur.

My plight: Nov. 2 ... but not really. Because the positions of Moderate Republicans are being touted and supported by Sen. John Kerry."
