Dividing the divisions

Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 11:56:58 PM PDT

Well, my thoughts for the day have been revolving around who in the Democratic camp is best suited at uniting the American people. And by uniting I mean bringing us together to rally around a common cause for the American people in general.

One of the biggest tragedies of the last four years have been the divisions that have arisen among us. We have become more of a divided nation than we ever should be. Hatred and venom are common traits of even simple political discussions. Can we tone this down?

Clash of civilizations redux

Fri Jan 14, 2005 at 10:31:33 AM PDT

Heres a questions to all those who have read Clash of Civilizations by Samuel P. Huntington. Did you find the book racist?

This has been a big question for me. Doing my undergraduate work in international relations I would constantly come upon this book as source material. It seemed to never fail with every report I would either find an article or excerpt that spoke upon my topic. I also noticed, especially when googling that the vast majority of these comments called the book racist. Not full of cultural imperialism(which it is) but out and out racist(not sure). But these articles (like so many) never told me why it is racist.

American Wedge Values pt. 1

Thu Jan 13, 2005 at 09:55:53 PM PDT

Well...here goes my first diary entry. Its something thats been in the back of my head for some time. Its about why Americans hate Americans. The whole right left dichotomy and why we hate ourselves. Why do both sides dont have the ability to understand each other even on the most fundamental level. Why parents dont understand their children and university kids dont "get" blue collar kids and vice versa.

Personally, I see it all as a great interconnected web of values that on the surface seem contrarian but deep down are shared almost across the board. Wedge issues are really what divide us and not the fundamentals as most would think.
