Sister Dorothy Stang's Ohio Funerals - Impressive

Sun Mar 20, 2005 at 10:29:07 AM PDT

Sister Dorothy Stang. Gosh I wish I had had the honor to have met her when she lived. I never did, but I've gotten to know her since her murder in Brazil. Sitting here right now I can imagine the smile on St. Peter's face as she approached the gates of heaven! In the last few days there were several funeral Masses in her honor in her native southwest Ohio. The Dayton Daily News had a news story and a commentary on these events.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God." Sister Dorothy Stang read those words from her Bible when two gunmen aimed weapons at her as she walked to a meeting in the Amazon jungle a month ago. The meeting was to organize poor farmers who were trying to hold on to their plots despite attacks from powerful ranchers and loggers. Stang, 73, a Roman Catholic nun, was shot six times by the men and died in the road. On Saturday, more than 600 mourners honored the Dayton native's sacrifice during a service held at the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur convent in suburban Cincinnati...

Kids Opt for Kerry in Bellwether Online Poll

Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 03:12:13 PM PDT

Polls - oh so many polls! They are unpredictable and confusing.

Well here's one that's always been right! In 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2000 it predicted the winner of the presidential election - and it doesn't involve RV's or LV's.  It's the Nickelodeon cable channel of kids 2-11.

Here's the results of this year's poll taken Tuesday from Reuters:

The kids have spoken, and it's Sen. John Kerry with a convincing victory over President Bush on Nov. 2. An unusual opinion poll that has correctly predicted the winner of the last four presidential elections has given Democratic challenger Kerry 57 percent against 43 percent for Bush, according to results released on Wednesday. The Nickelodeon cable channel, better known for programs "SpongeBob Squarepants" and "Jimmy Neutron," conducted "Kids Vote," an online survey of almost 400,000 children on Tuesday.

Thieves hit Toledo Democratic Party offices

Wed Oct 13, 2004 at 12:32:30 PM PDT

From today's Toledo Blade:

"Thieves shattered a side window overnight at Lucas County Democratic headquarters in Toledo, stealing computers with sensitive campaign information and triggering concern of the local party's ability to deliver crucial votes on Nov. 2. Among the data on the stolen computer of the party's office manager were: e-mails discussing campaign strategy, candidates' schedules, financial information, and phone numbers of party members, candidates, donors, and volunteers. Also taken were computers belonging to Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak and to a Texas attorney working with the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign to ensure election security.

"The thefts have prompted the Kerry/Edwards campaign and Democrats in Washington to offer help and have left local officials fretting about the crime's impact on the upcoming election, in which Ohio plays a high-profile role. "This puts us behind the eight ball," party spokesman Jerry Chabler said. 'This can affect our entire get-out-the-vote operation.'"

"Ohio's Democratic Party pledged to deploy volunteers, lend computers, or 'provide whatever source of assistance they need,' said spokesman Dan Trevas. The political importance of Lucas County cannot be overstated, Mr. Trevas said. 'It's a major Democratic county in a swing area, surrounded by Republican and moderates,' Mr. Trevas said. 'A lot of votes come out of northwest Ohio.'"
