Whigs, the lot of them.

Democrats: The New Whig party

The Whig Party was a political party of the United States during the era of Jacksonian democracy. It was integral to the Second Party System and operated from 1832 to 1856 and was formed to oppose the policies of President Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party he had founded. In particular, the Whigs supported the supremacy of Congress over the Executive Branch and favored a program of modernization and economic development.

The party was ultimately destroyed by the question of whether to allow the expansion of slavery to the territories. Deep fissures in the party on this question led the party to run Scott over its own incumbent President Fillmore in the U.S. presidential election of 1852. The Whig Party never elected another President, and saw its voter base disappear as its membership defected to the nativist Know-Nothing Party, the anti-slavery Republican Party, and even the hated Democrats.

The  Battle of Thermopylae

At a time of great willingness to compromise principles truth and justice for a minor tactical gain, `a little more time', not rocking the boat, when there is an overpowering temptation run in despair from the path of a powerful enemy, it is heartening to remember that there are times when noble sacrifice, humanhood, bravery, steadfastness, even in the face of certain death can be a both a moral and material victory.

In 480 B.C. King Xerxes of Persia invaded Greece, with the intent of expanding his empire and making vassals of the Greek nations. Militarily weak, physically and politically isolated, demoralized and crushed by prior defeat, the city states of southern Greece plans a desperate defense against a unified force many times their combined strength:

This is all political.

As Randi Rhodes put so succinctly, "George Bush is facing a Category 5 political disaster." The sad thing is republican operatives likely to realize that faster than Democrats. Here, we have a visceral, tragic, Hiroshima sized example of why we need an effective and accountable federal government and I haven't heard so much as a peep from a prominent Democrat about the political reality that created this tragedy. Democratic activists can, will and must communicate with the public about how this disaster relates to policy.
