Obama distanced himself from Brzezinski?

Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 09:48:56 AM PDT

I just read here that Obama had to distance himself from Brzezinski.

I find that somewhat disturbing.

From the article:
"If he is in for some tough questions, then Obama got a decent tuneup in this city two days ago, when he attended a meeting with about 100 local Jewish community leaders."

What would President Obama do? - Or How-to stop a genocide.

Wed Jan 02, 2008 at 09:24:57 AM PDT

I think it's conventional wisdom that the international community failed to stop the Rwanda genocide. Haunted by the horror images of the Rwanda killings, politicians all over the world vowed to not repeat the same mistake. There is still hope to do  something about the Darfur genocide, they insisted repeatedly. But is there? I doubt it, especially as I watch the news out of Kenya the last two days.

Dershowitz: Break up the Justice Department

Sat Mar 17, 2007 at 09:27:32 AM PDT

I wonder what the lawyers here at dailykos think about the proposal Alan Dershowitz made in this article. He suggests to create two positions in the Justice department that would provide for better independence of the DoJ from executive pressures, if I understand him correctly.

He mentioned that this model is used in most Western democracies and I tried to figure out how most European countries provide for an independent judiciary. It's complicated to understand for a common lay person like me. So I ask the lawyerly minds among you all: "Would it change anything?"

Senate Democratic Policy Cmte - Hearing on the Iraq War

Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 04:29:37 AM PDT

Why has NOTHING been said about this hearing? Why wasn't it covered in detail in the media? Did I miss it?

There have been very important statements made on that hearing and I can't understand why there hasn't been made much more noise about the content of the testimonies.

I still haven't understood one point. Please explain. I will delete this non-diary, if necessary, as it isn't a diary, but I need an answer please.

Secrets you don't talk about, never.

Sat Sep 23, 2006 at 09:17:09 AM PDT

secrets you want and need to get rid off, nevertheless. What do you do? You wait revealing the secret doesn't hurt anymore the persons you love most.

Sometimes life isn't as black and white as we wished it were. You can be a part of the Nazi death camp machinery and love a Jew til death do them part.

How do you judge the morals of this woman? Especially interesting, because Efraim Zuroff, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Chief Nazi hunter, said that "Germany is full of people like her".

Israel Into the NATO - Good or Bad Idea ?

Fri Jul 21, 2006 at 12:14:12 AM PDT

I ran over an article in the German weekly "Der Spiegel" which has been published only in German so far. But because I like to know if Kossacks have any opinion about the issue of a potential membership of Israel in the NATO, I tried to translate the article and wanted to show it to you. The German language of the author drove me a bit nuts, so the translation is more than mediocre and I have no German-English translations skills whatsoever anyhow.

I would be happy to accept any help to improve the translation.

Or if the subject is of any interest to others, please go ahead and write another diary about it.

It's late and I have to go, but would look into comments tomorrow morning.

Can the DoD Still Deny Conscientious Objectors Status?

Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 07:56:25 PM PDT

From this Amnesty International article

According to the administration of the United States, "moral clarity" was central to the reasons for going to war with Iraq. Saddam Hussein's regime was bad and had to be changed - it was the right thing to do.

Unfortunately for some, the right to stand up for your moral beliefs and act upon them only extended in one direction. While it showed "moral clarity" to take part in the war; two US soldiers learnt that dissenting was a punishable offence. Dissenting from the official view of the morality or otherwise of this war led to imprisonment for Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejía Castillo and Sergeant Abdullah William Webster.

If moral clarity is a thing that can't be agreed upon within administration, DoD, State Department and Congress, I ask myself, if the Pentagon would still have the right to deny members of the Armed Forces the Conscientious Objector Status.

If Congress can conscientiously object, so should soldiers.

Can Congress ask for an end to a war?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 at 09:00:48 PM PDT

If the President has to ask Congress to start a war, can Congress also ask the President to end a war? Can Congress do that and supercede the wishes of the Commander in Chief and the Sec. of Defense?

Is there anything in the books that would allow Congress to do that?

What is Lawrence Wilkerson up to? [with Update]

Sun Nov 20, 2005 at 06:30:45 PM PDT

Today, LAWRENCE WILKERSON, former Chief  of Staff of Secretary of State Powell, was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on Late Edition:

Something caught my interest, as I haven't heard that before and so I just wanted to point it out to you.  It's the stuff spy novels are made off - though I admit I never read spy novels, so forgive me if this diary turns out to be pure nonsense. Anyway, if you, like me, haven't heard and read the Rolling Stone article of last week yet, you might want to have a look at it. Because people like Lawrence Wilkerson just said on Late Edition that he wants to dig into that Rendon group much deeper. And this is all about the Rendonites.

Frontline Right Now: The Torture Question

Tue Oct 18, 2005 at 07:00:22 PM PDT

There is no open thread. I don't know where to post this question.  But I want to know if the broadcast on WETA in Frontline, which is shown right now under the title: "The Torture Question" is shown for the first time.

Concrete Houses - Cheap, Hurricane- and Flood Resistant

Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 06:32:01 PM PDT

When I thought about writing this diary, I was not sure, if it would be appropriate, because there is no strength left to think about the next step and the future.

But my guts feelings tell me that the best cure for the Katrina victims to overcome their trauma is to get to work asap.

Imagine the whole US would be devastated the way NO is right now and you wouldn't have another safe place where someone could transport you to, you wouldn't have no choice but pick up the pieces, clean-up, reconstruct and live forwardly.

I can't help it, but images from Berlin, May 8th 1945, after it was defeated and bombed flat out to rubble come to my mind. I know the first thing you do after such a destruction is to pick up the bricks and put them back together to build a house, no matter what.

What are Illegal Immigrants with an ITIN exactly?

Tue Aug 09, 2005 at 06:18:28 PM PDT

I heard on CNN (Lou Dobb's Show) tonight that banks, insurers and mortgage lenders target the business of undocumented illegal immigrants.

There is a profit to be made to offer loans and mortgages to illegal immigrants who want and can afford to buy a house in the US.

It may be against the law for the illegal immigrants to be in the U.S. or for an employer to hire them, but there's apparently nothing illegal about selling something to them.

I got confused and therefore wrote this diary. Forgive my English. I am no writer.

Civil Disputes Should Be Federal Crimes, Prosecutor Argues

Wed May 18, 2005 at 04:31:23 AM PDT

I know this is not diary material and there is more important stuff going on these days, but there is no open thread yet and I have to go to work. So, I don't know how else to place this. And I will not be around to react to your potential comments, sorry.
