In these times when so many have forgotten why we elect presidents, President Biden’s growing list of achievements in the presidency is once again reminding us that we elect our presidents not because they talk enough trash to fill four HEFTY bags(like you know who) but because we expect them to take on and lead in solving the major problems facing our country.
President Biden came into office at a very difficult time in our national history … a rampaging killer pandemic which his predecessor had completely fumbled and mismanaged, and a tanking economy with its attendant high unemployment. Overseas, the war in Afghanistan was not going our way... another headache caused by his predecessor’s serial ineptitude in negotiating a workable safe exit agreement with the government in Kabul and the Taliban insurgents. China, Russia and Iran had started flexing their alignment as the new “Axis of Evil”. NATO needed shoring up. And Russia’s unrelenting predation and depredations in Ukraine had to be stopped. Meanwhile back home the Republican Party in congress was on its own menacing and predatory bent against our civil liberties and undermining the foundational institutions and mores of our country … all in the service of the seemingly growing trend of autocracy around the world.
But in his own quiet but very effective way, President Biden has stood up against these menacing trends and successfully pushed through much needed solutions to problems both abroad and here at home, many of them long-standing and seemingly intractable. In my humble opinion he has quietly become the most effective President of the United States of America in the last fifty years. And he ain’t done yet.
There is now one more major issue to be tackled … Immigration Reform, especially as relates to our southern border with Mexico. A long standing issue, it is now festering with all manner of unpleasantness which is often couched in the euphemism of “Border Security”. The recently negotiated Senate bipartisan immigration reform rejected by congressional Republicans at the behest of Trump is still on the table. It needs to be brought up and pushed through with the same savvy and ardor that Mr. Biden brought to bear on the Ukraine aid bill. And I believe he aims to do just that. As he recently said when addressing the just signed Ukraine bill which at one time was paired with immigration reform … “There’s one thing this bill does not do: border security .. Just this year, I proposed, negotiated, and agreed to the strongest border-security bill this country has ever, ever, ever seen. It was bipartisan. It should have been included in this bill. And I’m determined to get it done for the American people.”
Mr. President, I am with you. Let’s get it done for the American people. And just maybe in the process take away from the repugnant Republicans one of their favorite hate mongering talking points.
