So, the scuttlebutt on the web and throughout the media ecosystem has been on a growing question; will there be any 2024 presidential debates.
I see arguments for and against.
The “for” arguments center on the idea that debates are a critical component of a free and fair election, and that it gives the people an opportunity to compare and contrast the candidates, and allow people who are undecided to make up their mind.
The “against” arguments center on the idea that we already know the differences between the two candidates (one believes in democracy and the rule of law, while the other doesn’t), and that attempting a traditional debate that we do every 4 years will only normalize the orange shitpile and create the perception that the fascism and political violence he advocates is a “valid” different set of political beliefs. As another Kossack said in his/her journal, it moves the Overton Window abruptly to the right.
Where do I fall in the debate over the debate?
I think there should be one, but not like the ones we usually have.
I think we need to have a debate where there are 6 people and one long table in the room.
Put the candidates on opposite ends off the table, with a single moderator in the middle, armed with a list of questions to ask, a pair of highly skilled and educated fact checkers, and a cameraman.
That’s it.
No audience to play off of and try to use to score cheap applause lines, No cheesy music. No fanfare. Just a straight debate, and fact checkers to correct either candidate in real time as much as possible.
Biden would mop the floor with the orange shitpile.
Let me know what the rest off you think.
