It may be sacrilegious on the Daily Kos to admire the actions of two former GOP Representatives, but these two set an example of sacrifice worthy of admiration. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger were censured by the GOP for participating on the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol insurrection. Cheney was then targeted by the GOP and defeated in her re-election bid, while Kinzinger chose not to run again after serving 12 years. Their sin was to obey their conscience and help expose the truth about Donald Trump’s lie of a stolen election and his instigation of the Capitol insurrection.
…it will be an extraordinary sacrifice for President Biden
to step aside in his bid for re-election.
It will be a difficult decision for President Biden, and it will most likely be through the urging of his family that he decides to step aside. Unfortunately, his recent ABC interview only solidified the view of more elected Democrats, donors, and voters that President Biden is not the right candidate to defeat Donald Trump in 2024 or lead the nation through 2028. If the Biden family isn’t already aware of this, they will be soon, as pressure mounts to select another candidate. The sooner President Biden leaves the race, the more he can do so with pride.
The word “unprecedented” seems overused, but we have truly been living in an unparalleled time where a bizarre extreme narcissistic demagogue threatens us. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented actions and sacrifices as noted. When your nation desperately comes calling on you for help, what do you do? That’s the uncomfortable position in which the former First Lady, Michelle Obama, finds herself.
The former First Lady…must know that she has the best chance…to spare our nation from the scourge of Donald Trump.
Unsurprisingly (with over a decade of high numbers), a respected July 1-2 poll shows Obama as the only prominent Democrat beating Trump. The former First Lady has been asked about running for high offices before and has always said no, but this time is different. She herself has expressed grave concern over the thought of Trump returning to power. Now, in the closing months before the election, with President Biden stepping aside, she must know that she has the best chance in this condensed campaign to spare our nation from the scourge of Donald Trump.
Michelle must also know that she wouldn’t exit the process unscathed. She’s seen and felt how bigoted and dangerous Trump and his enablers can be. One advantage of the condensed campaign is that it won’t prolong that punishment. But winning the 2024 election and serving four years as President of the United States isn’t what she had planned for her life. In doing so, she will be sacrificing her own personal hopes, dreams and goals which may never be replaced. No matter how attractive a tradeoff may appear, how many 60-year-olds will agree to sacrifice their next four years of planned life, for four stress-filled years of unpredictable challenges?
For the sake of our nation, let’s encourage Michelle Obama to reconsider and make herself available to run for president. Michelle Obama has a lot going for her. Here are just some of her robust resources that come to mind:
• Broad experience through two presidential campaigns
• A two-term president as husband and closest advisor
• An established network of government and non-government professionals
• Support from military families she’s worked with
• Ties from her international work
• Princeton University & Harvard Law School education
• Early non-profit work and work in co-founding the Obama Foundation
• Community service through the University of Chicago
• Strong character
• High intelligence
• Extraordinary eloquence
• Status as one of the most admired people in the U.S.A.
If you feel that former First Lady Michelle Obama is the right person to represent the Democratic Party as their 2024 U.S. Presidential Candidate, then let your elected Democratic Party representatives and senators know. Lastly, there’s the sacrifice of one other person to address. As Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, second in command, is the traditional obvious person to step into the role as president and presidential candidate should the current president be incapable of serving. But again, these are far from “traditional” times. The massive threat of Donald Trump and his enablers is real. Yes, it is “unprecedented.” Could Kamala Harris defeat Donald Trump? Certainly. The major complication to that possibility is the condensed campaign time frame. Unfortunately, Kamala’s current poll numbers versus Trump aren’t great. Should we take the chance that through three months her numbers can overtake Trump in the Electoral College gambit?
Kamala’s personal decision to forgo her ambition…
will be…an…extraordinary…admirable sacrifice
for the good of our nation.
With the stakes so high, the risk so great, and the strength of candidate Michelle Obama in the Democratic Party camp, why would we not look to our surest way to defeat Donald Trump? Kamala’s personal decision to forgo her ambition and her traditional expected move into the role of presidential candidate will be an extraordinary sacrifice – an admirable sacrifice for the good of our nation.
