I’m running because we are out of time.
We are in a moment, right now, where we cannot afford to underreact to the stakes. The person who fills this seat will either continue suppressing voices from outside of their Conservative silos, continue marginalizing entire groups of people, stripping the autonomy of women… OR they will help launch a new era that HAS to come next, an era defined by belonging, by inclusion, by equity, and equality.
I was the first Democrat to throw my hat in this race because across our country (and certainly our state), without exaggeration, our democracy is at stake. Our freedoms and our rights to our lives are on the line.
I’ve been called by our local paper “the most electable” in this tough race, I have written legislation that would protect women’s health information and geolocation data, and I have been the one that SHOWS UP when our home rule was threatened, our rights as women have been eradicated, the right to exist as LGBTQIA+ was almost eradicated, and our education system saw continuous attacks.
Our state is now leading in book bans and our county has spent tens of thousands of dollars in hearing costs. Florida heard TWENTY-THREE bills this session aimed at further marginalizing, discriminating, or eliminating spaces for our LGBTQIA+ community (thank goodness for Equality Florida and those that rallied with me at the Capitol to fight them!). Women saw a sixteen, and then six-week abortion ban...with NO EXCEPTIONS (until recently). We’ve failed to address climate change meaningfully- and make options more accessible and equitable-, and we have failed to address the housing, insurance, and affordability crises.
---
My opponent is very divisive, his paramour works for the state party, and, yet, I’ve stayed in this race because I KNOW we can win this. While my opponent was giving a good lip-game on how we should support women’s rights, I’ve been the one with boots-on-the-ground, attending NWL, Planned Parenthood, Yes on 4 meetings and protesting at the six-week abortion ban rally in Orlando.
We can pass legislation that is meaningful and sustainable. I’ve stayed because of the dozens of people who have said that our campaign has “carved a new path” for them to follow. I’ve stayed because this race is too important not to fight for. We cannot afford to undervalue the importance of this seat. This is OUR race, we’ve done this grassroots movement together from the start, because it’s OUR freedom we’re fighting for.
Florida is at a tipping point right now, and it’s time that we stand together in August, and then Roe-vember, and bring back sanity, empathy, and ethics into our government. It’s time we make our voices heard by electing principled leadership, and vote, according to human principles… of autonomy, of equality, of equity.
If you can, please donate what you can so we can continue expanding our message across the state and show that everyday people, that women, that progressives, CAN win and bring progressive, sustainable change to Florida, and to District 22.
Warmly,
Amy
