The photo above is my favorite picture of Hillary Rodham Clinton. I’m sure you all have your favorites and invite you to post them in the comments. Videos are welcome too.
Early on as First Lady she caught a lot of flack about her hair. Hillary was an iconoclast. Some men can do whatever they want with their hair. They are seen as eccentric. (E.g. Bernie Sanders, Cornel West, Paul Ryan). For women that is not cool. People thought she was too plain, that she should pay more attention to being stylish. We all know this is a sexist double standard but Hillary took it in stride and has a great sense of humor about this personal history. In 1995, she said this:
“If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle”
At Yale she peppered deadpan jokes about her hair all through a speech to the Yale coeds (Yale Class Day).
“The most important thing I have to say to you today is that hair matters. This is a life lesson my family did not teach me, Wellesley and Yale Law School failed to instill: Your hair will send significant messages to those around you. What hopes and dreams you have for the world, but more, what hopes and dreams you have for your hair. Pay attention to your hair, because everyone else will.”

[my bold]
Hillary Clinton has an irrepressible sense of humor.
More recently, at her 40th Anniversary of graduation from Yale Law School she waxed nostalgic. “I was driving a beat-up old car. I had a mattress tied to the roof. I was wearing my bell bottoms,” she said of pulling up at Yale in the summer of 1969, a turbulent political time that she said informed her lifelong worldview.
That reminded me of this picture.
Then there’s this one. Hillary Badass Clinton.
Some day we’ll say that one of President Hillary’s contributions to American culture was making it cool for women to wear pantsuits!
Your turn.
